Deine Lakaien: The songs on “Indicator” represent our roots

Deine Lakaien recently released their eight studio album “Indicator”, an album that bring the band back to their roots in the early 80′s. In this interview with the two members Alexander Veljanov and Ernst Horn you can read about what they said about the new album, any future plans and the importance of different constellations.

You’ll find my review of the album “Indicator” here.

Blackvector: Hi there! How are you doing?

Deine Lakaien: Thanks, we are fine. Having released the new album and having been on tour were good things to do. We are very satisfied with all and now we are not so far away from this year’s end. An important year for our long career and we understood that there are still many new things to discover.

Blackvector: You recently released your new album “Indicator”. Are you happy with the result?

Deine Lakaien: Yes , we are. We were not sure in the beginning of the work for this album if we would try to reach something new and unexpected without giving up our wellknown structures. But it worked, we tried to combine old and new, and in the end we are happy with the result and our audience seems to be positively surprised , too.

Blackvector: Did it turn out the way you had expected?

Deine Lakaien: We hoped that it will sound convincing and full of energy but also quiet and offering also moments of peace and knowledge.

Blackvector: Can you please tell the readers what the new album is all about?

Deine Lakaien: “Indicator” is a statement about our history and present. The songs represent our roots, electronic music from the early 80s, classical influences mixed with today’s topics like globalization, integration, migrstion,. Of course we also tried to add some songs about love and life itself to our collection. The record is an indicator and shows you what DL stands for in 2010.

Blackvector: The album sounds more electronic then previous album. Was that something you did aim for from the beginning?

Deine Lakaien: One important part of the basic work was to concentrate on our individual sounds. We love to use old analogue synthesizers and give our music a characteristic DL-sound. It is always better to sound unique than try to copy other bands.

Blackvector: How do you describe your music?

Deine Lakaien: We always tried to combine classical, postpunk/wave, psychedelic , electronic and folk music. Denied any borders except our own . A good song should always be the basic of everything. We love to play our music in different arrangements, from pure piano&voice up to orchestra&electronics. Everybody should just listen…and maybe discover something worth listening to. We don’t know what people expect from us but we can ask ourselves if our music is interesting or boring for us. We enjoyed thiese recordings a lot and hope that some others will do, too.

Blackvector: Both of you have several other projects. Is that a way of express your different ideas that do not fit with sound of Deine Lakaien or is it that you just want to have something that is your own?

Deine Lakaien: We always knew that it is very important to work on different projects in different constellations. So we always have fun to start a new chapter with DL after a certain break. It is like in a relationship, you realize the good things when you come back to it.

Blackvector: What are your plans now when the album is out? Will you continue with your other projects or do you have any kind of tour planned?

Deine Lakaien: We just finished our tour in Germany and will continue next February with more concerts in and outside Germany. We always love to play allover Europe and hopefully we will have the chance to.

Blackvector: Finally, any last words or thoughts for the readers?

Deine Lakaien: We hope that you take your time to listen to “Indicator”,… maybe it needs more than one runthrough. It would be very nice to play concerts in Sweden, because we remember the audience at Arvika festivalen, where we played some years ago, very well. It was a highlight for us. So hopefully see you soon!

I thank Alexander Veljanov and Ernst Horn of Deine Lakaien for doing this interview.
