Diorama “Child Of Entertainment” (MCD Accession)
Review:
9/10
Artist: Diorama Title: Child Of Entertainment Format: CDM Label: Accession Records Genre: Electronic Release date: February 5, 2010
Diorama returns in 2010, three years after the successful release of the album “A Different Life” with this new single “Child Of Entertainment”, prior to the new studio album “Cubed” to be released on March 19th. This new single holds a total of 7 tracks with five versions of the title track and a remake of their hit “HLA” from the album “Her Liquid Arms”. The song is has the title Hideous Heart attached to it. A live version of “Advance” completes the single. Notable about the title of the single: The Diorama song “Howland Road” from their album “The Art Of Creating Confusing Spirits” includes the lyrical line ‘Let your children entertain you’.
The single starts with the “Cubed” version and this will also be the version included on the upcoming album. Notable from its first tunes is that it has a quite different sound compared to latest albums, but instead it takes you back to their earlier works like the “Her Liquid Arms” album, and maybe that’s why they have included two other songs from just that album. Though, it has an updated sound to the more modern one but still with an amazing depth and emotional lyrics like we are used to from Diorama. The voice from Torben Wendt is spell-bounding and it strikes through your heart and touches your soul with his beautiful lyrics. It’s a great track and offers great synthesizers and quite a relaxing atmosphere. Next up is the “Clubbed” version and the name kinda speaks for itself. A powerful version with a darker approach to it and the beats is heavier with a more distinct bass. The third version is “Trapped” and it kinda differs pretty much from the two first ones. Here you a presented with a slow track with lowered beat count in a ballad type of song. We’ve heard these type of songs from Diorama before and we know they are good at it.
Halfway through we get to the song “HLA (Hideous Heart)” and as I mentioned before the original version is included on “Her Liquid Arms”. With this version, Diorama has reworked their old classic song and updated it with todays modern technologies. Compared to the original one, they have created a modern club version with a heavy beat structure and darker atmosphere. Followed is the “Broken” version of “Child Of Entertainment” and this one is presented with almost only the voice of Torben and a piano with minimal synthesizers. It’s beautiful and gives the song a different touch. The last version of the title track is “Stolen”. With a distorted sound structure and screaming vocals by Torben this version gives you everything you didn’t get in the other versions. What ends up this single is a live version of “Advance” recorded in Reutlingen. This is another song originally released on the earlier mentioned “Her Liquid Arms” album. It’s a great version that probably gives the listener a hint of what a great live-act Diorama probably is. Unfortunately, I haven’t get the chance to see them yet but I’m waiting for the right opportunity.
All version of the title track sounds very different from each other and somehow it’s very rare to see these days and it puts this single in a pretty unique output. But it’s not only the sound that is different, the vocals have also been reworked to fit with each version. I think this is a winning concept to get the singles back as a selling product. However, “Child Of Entertainment” is an outstanding track and a true appetizer for the album which I think is one of the most excited and longed-for albums of this year.
