I don’t think Front Line Assembly need any big introduction here. This Electronic/Industrial project of Bill Leeb, Chris Peterson, Jeremy Inkel and Jared Slingerland has been around since the late 80′s. It’s been three years since their latest release in “Fallout” but the band returns in 2010 with a new studio album, entitled “Improvised Electronic Device”, to be out on June 25th and preceeded with this single.
The single comes in the good old fashionable output of the title track together with two additional tracks including the album track “Angriff”, without any remixes. But this is the style of Front Line Assembly, they never have releases with a bunch of remixes.
With the track “Shifting Through The Lens”, the band shows off a more modern sound of EBM and compared with their latest releases where the heavy guitars have had a stand out role – atleast that’s what I think – is very distant. They are still present though, in the background, but here it’s the electronic instruments that are the main instrument. With a distinct bassline and very rhythmic approach I like the track. “Angriff” is a very classical FLA track and the opening is amazing with its organic structure, calm and very deep atmospere before the heavy distorted guitars are introduced together with the dark voice of Bill Leeb. Last out is the instrumental track “Endless Void” and it’s almost a 10-minute journey of calm electronic soundscapes blended with harmonic ambient elements and even here the atmosphere is breathtaking.
The sound of “Shifting Through The Lens” draws resemblance to the “Hard Wire”-album released back in 1995 and is an amazing choice for a single. Front Line Assembly has once again delivered a masterpiece. Let’s wait and see how good the album is.
