Started as a one-man project in 1990 by Tilo Wolff, Lacrimosa celebrates it 20th anniversary in 2010 with the album “Schattenspiel” (Shadow Play) on which they present 15 unreleased versions over the past 20 years together with the two brand-new tracks “Sellador” and “Ohne Dich Ist Alles Nichts”, which were made especially for this release.

Lacrimosa as a band is new to me and the gothic music is nothing I usually listen to. The music very dark and offers a very densed atmosphere together with characterized orchestral compositions.

Even though the music is something I doesn’t normally review, or haven’t done at all for that matter. But when I got the opportunity to do it on this, I said to myself ‘ok, I’ll give it at shot’. Most of the music didn’t suited me at all but I found a couple of goodies. The sixth track for example, “Dem Ende Entgegen”. Beautiful arrangements and a nice melodic touch. “Vermächtnis Der Sonne” is another one and starts out with a beautiful but very sad piano together with harmonic soundscapes in the background before the acoustic guitars and drums are added. Once again a nice melody is present. Other recommended tracks is “Ein Hauch von Menschlichkeit” in a late night remix and Deja Vu together with the new tracks “Sellador” and “Ohne Dich Ist Alles Nichts”.

When listening from start to finish you’ll notice the change in sound during this 20 year period from the more darker sound in the beginning where it slightly gets brighter and much more clearer sound during the last seven years. However, this promo-copy doesn’t include the full versions of the songs which is a disappointment, therefor the rating is affected.
