| Artist: [:SITD:] Title: Icon:Koru Format: Album Label: Accession Records Genre: Dark Electro Release date: November 18, 2011 |
Another two years have passed since the critically acclaimed “Rot” album. [:SITD:] are now back with their fifth studio album, entitled “Icon:Koru”.
Explained by the band, the koru, which is often used in Maori art as a symbol of creation, is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, and its inward coil suggests a return to the point of origin.
Not only does this album mark the return to their roots but it is also the 15th year anniversary since the band was created. The core sound is still there and in a way lots of elements can be reflected from their 2003 debut album “Stronghold” and a point of still heading into the future with a modern sound.
Intros is something I think [:SITD:] are very good at. “Icon:Koru” is no exception and starts with “Extrajudical Punishment”. A great opening before it kicks off with the outstanding “Code:Red”. The heavy beats and distorted vocals from Carsten Jacek is there, along with the emotional and very atmospheric soundscapes. This is probably the lead track for the album and the start of an onslaught of powerful songs, like the follow-up to “Richtfest” with “Periculär (Richtfest II)”, “Beacon Of Hope” or the energetic “Dark Defender”. Ambient elements, mixed with heavier Industrial and their signature sound of dirty and gritty electronics.
Once again, Carsten and Tom split the vocals where Carsten stand for the powerful and heavy approach and Tom deliver strong and harmonic lines. The band are known for their unique mix of heaviness and melodic approach and is today one of the top acts within the scene.
[:SITD:] is actually one of those bands I’ve been following since my very first days in this genre and I will certainly not forget the strike of their popular “Snuff Machinery”. There have been some ups and downs during their career so far with “Bestie:Mensch” being their weakest one. They returned strong two years ago with “Rot” and now they push it even further with “Icon:Koru” being their best album to date together with the debut “Stronghold”, which still is stunning.
The new album also comes packed in a limited 4CD anniversary edition featuring the album, a best of collection between 2001-2003 in new recordings, a remix disc and the early works from 1996 and 1999.
